The Great Migration, featuring over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra, is a massive, predator-driven ecological event in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Predators like lions, hyenas, and Nile crocodiles exploit this, peaking during the dangerous river crossings (June-October). It is a brutal “circle of life” event. The Great Migration unfolds as a year-round cyclic event, where over a million wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, elands, and other antelopes move across vast distances– all in pursuit of sustenance, safety, and the continuation of their species. It is regarded as one of the largest and oldest wildlife migrations on Earth. The Serengeti migration season begins with the birth of calves and foals in the south. The approximately two million wildebeest, zebra, eland and gazelle then move northwest in the pursuit of fresher grasses in central Serengeti. From there, the herds undertake the daunting task of crossing the Grumeti River into northern Tanzania before continuing to southern Kenya to begin the Masai Mara migration.
